Bulletin Board

Bulletin Board messages will remain for one year from the date of posting at which time they will be removed unless an email is received requesting that the message be allowed to remain for a further year - no prompting will be made. Please notify changes of email address - any messages with defunct email addresses will be removed. If you have some information which you think is relevant please contact the enquirer directly.

Please include the following information with your message:

  1. your name
  2. your email address
  3. the subject of your message - please try to be relevant without being too long e.g. a subject of AINSLEY is too broad - something like "Bilsdale Farms" or "AINSLEY California" is better

The aim of the Bulletin Board is to help people move their research forward. I'm sorry that I cannot post replies to messages as this is a manual, fully moderated Board and I'm sure it would prove very time-consuming - automatic boards are either expensive or come with advertising.

If you would like a message to be considered for posting please email

Looking for information please regarding Thomas Ainsley born in 1946 at Cowton Station nr. Northallerton where his father was an inspector of the railway. He emigrated to Perth Australia as a young man where he worked as a builder/contractor. He returned to live with his aunt, my g.g. grandmother, in Darlington, Co Durham in about 1906 after his wife died and he died there in 1936. He left 2 sons and a daughter back in Australia. He was a freemason and a keen chess player. He was also related to George Stephenson his mother being the inventors sister. There is quite a mystery going on here so any information would be gratefully received.

SUBJECT: AINSLEY Silksworth DATE POSTED: 18 December 2006
Joseph Ainsley came form Silksworth. His father was a gardener, I believe at Silksworth Hall. He moved to Darlington after the war. Joseph enlisted in Wrexham and there must be a story there.
I am researching the war memorials in Silksworth and am trying to collect information on each man who was lost and any others that served and came back. A photograph would be most welcome but any more information or contacts that might have information would be good. The idea is to have a virtual memorial to all the men who went to war from Silksworth and Tunstall. I am building up a web site http://www.tunsilk.co.uk

I go back 7 generations but they all disappear after 1901 census.-- In particular Richard John Atkinsson A b1889 and Winifred b1897 who may have died a spinster in Cleveland 1945--the males seem to have the name Lauchlan/lothian/James through the generations.Any help very much appreciated.

SUBJECT: Walter Ainsley and Mary Jane Reay, Dubois Pennsylvania DATE POSTED: 27 March 2005

I am looking for specific history of my mother's side and the Ainsley family name. My grandmother, Lillian Belle (nee Ainsley) Mundy born 1894 to Walter and Mary Jane in Dubois, Pennsylvania. I understand that Walter was the seventh son of the Scottish Ainsley or Ainslie that immigrated to the United States in 1866. The other brothers, all but the first born immigrated earlier. My grandmother Lillian Belle and her mother Mary Jane Reay Ainsley immigrated to Canada in 1908. I don't know when Walter Ainsley was born or where in Scotland or if he married Mary Jane Reay in Pennsylvania, or before they left Scotland.

I am the granddaughter of Robert Cresswell Ainsley and Catherine Ainsley (nee Barnes) who lived in the Harrogate area for much of their married life. To help me with the research I would love to hear from descendants of my Grandfather (Robert's) sisters. The sisters were:
Ada Ainsley (born in Morpeth in c. 1894/5) = married name 'Macertee';
Isabel Ainsley (born in Idle, Yorks in c. 1897, it is believed that Isabel married a Swiss national and went to live in Switzerland);
Elsie Ainsley (born in Dewsbury c. 1899) = married name 'Murray'.

NAME:

Cathy Vail Flamholtz
EMAIL:
SUBJECT: Ainsley from North Carolina DATE POSTED: 29 April 2004

My great grandmother was, according to her marriage license, Indiana Virginia Ainsley. On another document it was spelled Ansley. She was known as Anna or Annie. She would have been born about 1860, possibly 1862. On 14 Feb. 1878, in Lees Mill, North Carolina (that's in Washington County), she married William Carney Vail. They had three children that I've been able to document: Louis Henry (born abt 1879), Caledonia (born abt 1882) and Ida (birthdate unknown).
Hope someone can give me some help.

NAME:

Deborah Mitchell (nee Stokes) EMAIL:
SUBJECT: Descendants of William Atkinson and Sarah (nee Ainsley) DATE POSTED: 22 April 2003

I have good reason to believe myself the great-grandaughter of William Atkinson, son of William Atkinson and Sarah (nee Ainsley), but I can't find -- at least, not on the net -- the conclusive evidence, as he seems to appear only in the Ainsley family tree. My mother does remember that he was born in Bilsdale, and she remembers a great-uncle Lou (who is, I think, the brother, Louie). The William Atkinson I am trying to trace married Jane Monkman of Huttons Ambo, and they later lived at Settrington. They had five daughters: Mary, Edith, Elsie, Bess (my grandmother) and Hilda. If anyone has any information that would help me to establish the link I believe is there, I'd be really pleased to hear from you.

NB from AJ: From Wm Cyril Ainsley's notes I have the following: Sarah was born 6 May 1838, she had an illegitimate son Stephen, who was born 9 April 1857 at Brecon Hill. In the same year, on 9 May 1857 she married William Atkinson, jet miner, of Skelton-in-Cleveland, Martha, No.46, was a witness. In 1861 they were at the Mount, Urra, with their children, John born 1859, Margaret born 1860, Louie and possibly William (Willie). William Atkinson was born 1833 and was the brother of John the second husband of Mary Ainsley No.41.
