38th Division Memorial, Mametz Wood Petra, Jordan coming soon

Having spent a freezing (!) two hours on a very quick visit here several years ago we were determined to return - in the year 2000 we finally came back to devote three days to exploring these remarkable ruins.

Another promised visit also realised - to Wadi Rum and the desert beloved of T.E.Lawrence.

Rameses II at Luxor

Egypt

Two visits ten years apart saw many changes in Egypt - but the monuments are as stunning as ever.

The Monument of the Discoveries

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon has friendly people, great food and wine, one of the most impressive monuments in the world - and is within easy reach of Peninsular War battlefields - for those so inclined!

La Sagrada Famiglia Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is a wonderful city with a new waterfront area to add to the perennial attractions of the Ramblas and the magnificent architecture of Gaudi.

Temple at Selinunte Sicily

A bit of a shot in the dark coming to Sicily as we knew very little about this large island apart from Taormina which we had visited some years ago. We stayed in the southern coastal town of Sciacca but our main interest was in the temples of Segesta, Selinunte and Agrigento and these did not disappoint. The plastic covering the amphitheatre at Eraclea Minoa rather spoilt the effect and our quest to discover more about Sicilian wines wasn't too successful either!

Mosaic, Herculaneum

Southern Italy

A return to Southern Italy after a very brief visit to Pompeii in the pouring rain some years ago. Staying well away from Naples near the famous temple complex of Paestum, we explored Pompeii and the equally (possibly more?) impressive ruins of Herculaneum, took on the crazy drivers on the Amalfi Coast and visited the sulphurous vents of the Phlegrean Fields

St Esteban, Segovia

Northern Spain

A journey undertaken for many reasons - to see more of the "true" Spain, an interest in the Peninsular War, searching for new wines - relaxation didn't really come into it! Our overly ambitious initial plans coallesced into an itinerary covering the cities and surroundings of Toledo, Salamanca, Haro and Segovia.

Battlefields of Northern France
The Somme and Vimy

This account is a combination of two visits made in September 1992 and May 1997. The first visit included sites related to the Accrington Pals and their attack on the first day of the Somme, other significant events which occurred on that morning, and Vimy Ridge. The second visit included places significant to William Hill of the 2nd Green Howards who was killed on October 17th, 1916, and to whom this site is dedicated.
